Hrankin, Vitaliy

Profile created: on the 26th of October, 2015

Region: Kharkiv oblast

Before the ATO Vitaliy used to work in tubing and heating systems installation. When combat actions started he, a 45-year-old Kharkiv inhabitant, definitely decided to go to war as a volunteer soldier, and as early as on the 14th of May, 2014 he started to execute his duty. Then in a month their company was sent to the ATO zone to their stationing.

“We took over the first roadblock on the 6th of June and began to move from Volnovakha town [in Volnovakha district of Donetsk oblast] towards Ilovaisk town [in Khartsyzk district of Donetsk oblast]. Fightings started near Ilovaisk. The „Donbass“ battalion (other name of this military unit: „Donbass“ 2nd Special Purpose Battalion of the National Guard of Ukraine) and other Ukrainian military units took part in combat actions. Ukrainian Armed Forces had been trying to get to the town since the 10th of June but separatists paramilitary groups had a very strong fortification there, so we needed strong military hardware“, he pointed out.

Vitaliy tells about the enemy armed forces‘ readiness for the battle at the moment when our positions were virtually open and unarmed. „Where could we get any hardware? We got one anti-aircraft cannon and an antitank gun made in the 1940s, there was  a motto on it „For Motherland!“, we painted it over and wrote again „For Ukraine!“, - he told.

The enemy gained the rear of Ukrainian military units and surrounded them. They had no way to retreat, otherwise it was useless to fight because the enemy‘s forces numbered about 60 armoured forces elements.

Vitaliy told, „they started to fire again at 6 a.m. from the Russian side. And then at 1:30 p.m. we saw a big convoy which numbered about 50-60 armoured forces elements. We sent a transmitter message about that and got an answer, „it‘s our people, meet them!“ They stopped in 100 metres from us, then they began to draw up, but I told one of my fellow soldiers at once I guessed this were not our forces. The reason for me to think so was that we do not have this quantity of IFVs (infantry fighting vehicles) in all Ukraine, and they were all brand-new. And then, when our deputy platoon commander returned he told they were not from our forces. At that moment we were surrounded by Russians from the rear and by separatists from the front. We were 27 persons against 600“.

Then endless 68 days of captivity proceeded where Vitaliy got serious health problems. Captives had to unload ammunition. This workload led to hernias appearing in Vitaliy‘s spinal column which needs surgery. They ate 2 spoons of cooked cereal and a piece of bread a day. Because of such diet Vitaliy got problems with his bowels.

„We ate no one knows what with no one knows what dirty hands, we went to unearth fallen soldiers and civilians whose bodies stayed in the ground about a month, and then we gave the bodies to the „Black Tulip“ [the separatists‘ name for the action of „National Memory“Alliance Ukrainian Public Organization] for reburial. We lived and slept on concrete slabs. I got problems with my stomach. I know where it hurts but what exactly hurts? I need to undergo a complete medical examination which no one can do in Kharkiv for free. I heard though that a law has been passed in Ukraine that ATO soldiers all have to undergo a complete medical examination. Can you tell me where it is possible? It will be my pleasure to do it“, - he said.

Vitaliy needs urgent medical examination and spinal column medical treatment.
