Sergey Titarenko

A Commander of the crew of the 16th separate brigade of Army Aviation, a 30-year old military pilot Sergey Titarenko needs help. He received a serious spinal injury after his helicopter was shot down by Russian mercenaries on June the 4th, 2014 near Slaviansk. Sergey's wife died of cancer. He is left on his own with his son, who is not even one and a half  years old.

This is reported by "Cenzor.NET."

On June the 4th, 2014 professional military pilot Sergey Titarenko, crew commander of the 16th separate brigade of Army Aviation, took to the sky for a combat mission in the area of anti-terrorist operations. Together with the Deputy Brigade Commander Colonel Valentin Tsyhulsky he had to destroy a group of terrorists who were firing MANPADS  from residential areas of the city Slaviansk (Donetsk region). Upon reaching the destination, the crew managed to release a few shells at the location of deployment of Russian mercenaries. After that, the pilots felt a strong blow to the area of the right engine -  the mercenaries managed to shot Mi-24, in which were our pilots. The helicopter began to lose altitude sharply and fell from approximately hundred meter height near the locality Mayaku.

Sergei realized that he could not get out of a burning helicopter because he could not feel the legs and back. But Lt. Col. Valentin Tsyhulsky who also was seriously injured in the accident, pulled together his last strength and pulled the boy from the burning plane. The verdict of the doctors was disappointing - fracture of the third, fourth and fifth vertebrae of the thoracic spine, spinal cord injury and related injuries. Then there was a resuscitation, surgery, four months of treatment in the Kyiv military hospital. But the hope that Sergey will be able to walk again or even sit was very small. Kind people gathered a decent amount of money and sent him to Germany for treatment.

"With the help of the commanders the crew collected most of the money - 35 thousand euros, found philanthropist who helped anonymously, and another 22 thousand euro were collected by relatives, friends and volunteers - caring people. In Germany I received a difficult operation, metal structure was inserted into the spine. Initially doctors predicted lying lifestyle, but, thank God, and thanks to my wife I was put into the active wheelchair ", - says Sergey.

Today, Sergey still can not walk, but can sit and can move independently using a wheelchair. Doctors say that there are chances that Sergey will walk again - yes, but ahead of him is a long and difficult rehabilitation. But of course this requires considerable funds. Today representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States with the assistance of the American consulate in Ukraine are trying to send Sergey for rehabilitation to the United States.

A week ago another misfortune has happened to the Titarenko family: Sergey’s wife - Natalia died of cancer. 30-year-old man, an invalid of the first group was left with the baby, who is not even one and a half years old (1.2) on his hands without their own accomodation. Little son Jura now lives with his grandmother (his mother Natalia) in a panel five-story building with no elevator at the top floor. Sergey cannot physically reach the fifth floor in a wheelchair - so he is now living with friends.

The commandment of his brigade promised by the end of the month to resolve the issue of housing for Sergey - they should give him a flat in the village nearby. We hope that very soon it will become a reality. Little Jura is keen for his  Dad to recover soon so they could be together.
